The Healing Power of Dandelion

Why We Love Dandelion – And You Should Too!

When we have a true understanding of herbs, what they do in the body and how to work with them, we become aware of how perfectly Mother Nature takes care of us, and become empowered to heal ourselves. So let us learn and celebrate the amazing power of Dandelion!

To those who have become disconnected from the plant kingdom, this wonderful herb may be considered just a pesky weed on the lawn. But to herbalists and foragers all over the world, Dandelion is a powerful medicine used by many generations for healing and regenerating the body. Botanically, Dandelion belongs to the family of Asteraceae; in the genus “Taraxacum”, and known scientifically as Taraxacum officinale. There are many common names for this herb like ‘Priest’s Crown’, ‘Irish Daisy’, ‘Monk’s Head’, ‘Blowball’ and ‘Lion’s Tooth’. There are around 30 species of Dandelion found all over the world. You can find Dandelions in disturbed soils, garden edges, meadows and roadsides. You can use the roots, stems, flowers and leaves. The Dandelion flowers are full of Vitamin D, and the roots and leaves contain rich amounts of minerals.

You can use the dried Dandelion root or leaf in tea, tincture or capsule form. The bitter compounds in the roots and leaves give them their diuretic properties, which help to purify the blood, liver, relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation. You can also use the powdered and roasted root as a coffee substitute. The young Dandelion leaves are great raw in salads or as a steamed green. Freshly juiced leaves are also powerfully beneficial for cleansing the liver, spleen and lymphatic system. It truly is one of the most popular herbs for addressing liver stagnation.

Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar strongly recommends this herb for bloating, pre-menstrual irritation, and for breast tenderness and says that it is “invaluable to women going through menopause.” Dandelions are high in Beta Carotene, Vitamin A and Iron. Additionally, they are also a good source of vitamins C, D and the entire B complex, and provide a hefty dose of the minerals calcium, potassium and zinc.

Our Favorite Herbal Blends that Contain Dandelion

Some of the wonderful herbal blends we carry that utilize the power of Dandelion is Dr. Morse’s Kidney and Bladder Tonic, The Liver and Gallbladder Formula, and the incredible Superfood Blends. The 3 products are all equally powerful and healing. We always recommend our clients to make sure their kidneys are properly filtering if they plan on starting a detox, this is where The Kidney and Bladder Tonic comes in. Our cells might be ready to let go of acidic waste but if the kidneys can’t filter these toxins, they just end up re-circulating in our system or coming out through our skin which can be a very uncomfortable process.

The Liver Gallbladder formula is excellent for cleansing the liver, which is one of our main detox organs. And Dr. Morse’s Superfood blends are incredible for someone who wants to make sure their body is getting all the nutrition it needs during their cleansing process. If you haven’t seen the ingredients in the Superfood Blends 1 and 2, I suggest you check it out. They are full of high vibration superfoods, herbs and adaptogens – definitely one of my favorite products that Dr. Morse has formulated.
