Your Holistic Skin Care Toolkit

It’s been estimated that the average woman uses over a dozen different beauty products each day, containing well over 100 different chemicals. And many men are catching up quickly! From facial scrubs to moisturizers, most conventional products are packed full of synthetic ingredients, and words we can’t pronounce. While the claims of today’s modern skincare products are hard to resist, I think it’s time to get back to basics with our skincare, and start using products that are natural, clean, and are environmentally responsible too.

The truth is, we don’t actually need all those fancy factory-made lotions and potions. Our skin is infinitely intelligent, like the rest of our bodies, and is always seeking a state of clarity and balance. And it helps to support our skin’s natural glow with the right kinds of products. Ones that don’t contain ingredients linked to health hazards, or worse, ingredients that we don’t know the long-term effects of yet! Thankfully, there are some wonderful skincare brands out there nowadays, made with natural ingredients and healing herbs.

Over the years, I’ve tried so many different products, but have finally settled on some great options that I now adore. Whether your skin is dry, oily, combination, or somewhere in the middle, it’s never too late to make the switch to holistic skincare. Here are some of my current favorites:

1. Amaki Jasmine & Rose Oil

For wonderful, nourishing support for just about any skin type, this oil hits it out of the park. Not only is it gorgeous, with the rosebuds glistening in the golden oil, but it is supremely moisturizing and smells lovely. It is thoughtfully blended, featuring several medicinal plants that are known to smooth skin, boost elasticity, and soothe irritation. I’ve long used argan oil and rosehip oil on my face, but this adds several other ingredients that amplify the glowing effects. The Amaki Jasmine & Rose oil features these natural ingredients:

Argan oil, Evening Primrose, Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Rosehip Oil, Jasmine Essential Oil, Bergamot Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, Rosewood, and Rosebuds.

Not only can you use this on your face, but it can be used on the hair and nails too, for a soft, smooth shine.

2. Amaki Japanese Tsubaki Oil

This lovely little bottle of liquid gold is designed to be your natural weapon against age-related skin complaints. Packed with soothing, nourishing, anti-aging compounds, this natural, non-toxic facial oil goes on smooth and smells great. I love to use the Tsubaki Oil first thing in the morning, to wake up my skin and get a little extra glow. You don’t need much either- just a few drops- which means this bottle will last! The Amaki Japanese Tsubaki Oil contains:

Camellia japonica seed oil, Oryza sativa (rice) bran oil, organic Helianthus annus (sunflower) seed oil, organic Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, organic Argania spinosa (argan) oil, Aurantium amara (neroli) flower oil, Matricaria recutita (chamomile) flower oil, Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, tocopherol (vitamin E).

If you want a facial oil that’s moisturizing, soothing, and brightening, without the synthetics, this is a great choice!

3. Amaki Rose Water

One of my skincare secrets for years now has been rosewater toner. Not only does it smell amazing, but it acts as a gentle astringent to tighten pores and improve firmness. Amaki Rose Water spritz makes for a great addition to any routine, and can be used either under or over facial oil or another moisturizer. I love to spritz my face in the middle of the day too, if it’s feeling dry (hello seasonal central heating) or as part of a self-care spa day.

This product is 100% pure and natural, made with only distilled rose floral water, from the Damascus Rose. It has a lovely scent, and is gentle enough to use on all skin types.

4. LaLune Seaweed Powder

Most of us have heard of the health benefits of seaweed, at least when it comes to eating it! But did you know it makes for an amazing skin treatment too? With the LaLune Seaweed Powder, you can mix up your very own facial masks, scrubs, or even body wrap treatments, for the ultimate anti-aging luxury. Applying seaweed, particularly kelp, topically has been shown to reduce cellulite, boost blood flow, and soothe irritation. It’s packed with natural proteins, minerals, and vitamins, which feed the skin and result in a healthy glow.

The LaLune Seaweed Powder is made from certified organic 100% atlantic kelp, with nothing else added, so you can feel good about putting this on your body!

5. LaLune Zinc Oxide Powder

A top ingredient in many natural sunscreens, deodorants, and makeup products, zinc oxide is a wonderful material to have on hand. If you are an avid DIY-er like me, you’ll appreciate having a jar of LaLune pure zinc oxide powder, to whip into a variety of skin and body care creations. Most sunscreens and deodorants on the market today contain dozens of harmful chemicals, but you can get great results without them, thanks to ingredients like pure zinc oxide. Personally, I blend some of this powder into my moisturizer for a gentle SPF, in my makeup setting powder, and in my acne cream, but there are lots of other uses too!

The LaLune Zinc Oxide Powder contains only non-nano (big enough particles that they’ll sit on top of the skin, and not be absorbed) uncoated zinc oxide.

6. LaLune Indian Healing Clay

Sodium bentonite clay is one of the most powerful detoxifying clays on the planet, with impressive drawing abilities. Also known as “Indian healing clay,” bentonite is a fantastic skincare tool, particularly for anyone struggling with acne or oiliness. It can also be used to detox the scalp, and even your armpits! I usually mix my LaLune Indian Healing Clay with some water, herbal tea, or rosewater for a detoxifying face mask, or as an acne spot treatment.

Because it pulls impurities out of the skin so well, I always recommend going slowly with bentonite, or mixing it with other clays. I love to feel the tight tingle after using this as a mask! Bentonite can also be mixed with water into a paste and applied to things like bug bites and stings.

Together, these six ingredients make for a well-rounded holistic skincare kit, and are perfect for anyone looking to detoxify their beauty routine. If you’re not afraid of a little DIY mixing, the powders are so much fun, and when you want the ultimate spa-level pampering, the Amaki products take the cake.

With amazing, clean, natural products on hand, you can feel empowered to care for your skin without all the chemicals.
